I normally run 'FMJ' rounds by Monarch through my carbine.  Recently I mistakenly purchased some of Monarch's 'SP' rounds.

My carbine never has a problem with the 'FMJ'... I just wonder about the 'SP' and properly ramping to chamber.

I very paranoid and just looking for advise because I recently had a $$ failure using a couple of Dad's old 'made in somewhere' rounds.

Thanks....

If cartridge OAL and the bullet profile are the same, they should perform identically, at least before they impact. If they don't work in your carbine worst case is feed issues. May be able to check that without firing

OAL is easy. How can you compare bullet profiles? I dunno but I think an easy way is to take an aluminum block and drill some holes with a drill press. Maybe 1/4" diameter is good. Then stand the cartridge upside down in your new hole and measure with a height gage (or your calipers) the height of the base of the case above the bock. Height for FMJ and SP cartridges should be the same for any hole size if bullet profiles are identical.

I have used PPU and Rem soft points many times with no issues. I believe that PPU makes Monarch for Academy Sports.

blackfish,

Large thanks for the input.... my concern was not the over all length, but the tip of the 'bullet' being lead....

Questions: would it feed properly having a lead 'nose' after the receiver/chamber is hot?? And would the lead nose transfer/scuff and build up on the 'feed' ramp' perpetuating down the road issues??

Sure I'm over-thinking this, but it never hurts to ask questions.

Thanks.

Factory SP or FMJ ammo designed for the 30 Carbine should cause no issues. Lead build up on the ramp has never happened for me.

As far as quality goes not all projectiles are created equal. My hand loads always group better, I credit good Hornady bullet construction.

I have shot a gaggle of roll-my-own Hornady Mauser 86-grain 308 soft-points and still shootin’ in all my carbines. Only issues I have ever had is trying to make one eat the open face HP’s.

The last I understood was that Monarch was Academy Sports rebranded ammunition made by Prvi Partizan. If still so I have shot a lot of the PPU FMJ and SP 30 cal carbine. I think it is good ammunition. I have never had to modify the feed ramps on any of my carbines for FMJ or SP made by anybody. When I try something new I buy just a few boxes and shoot it before buying in quantity if that is what I want.

I've been shooting lead bullets with gas checks added in my carbine and they feed just like FMJ
