Can anyone give me a link or suggestion on a comprehensive listing of the wartime M-4 production and any markings (beyond the manufacturer) that you may find on them? I picked up an Imperial today at a show and was wondering what the "S P" on top of each other ( looks like an S with a line down the left side of it forming a vertical SP) on the end of the knife just above the lug mount cut-out represents. Also, underneath the USM8A1 on the scabbard is B.M CO. Does anyone know who or what these markings are?

Thanks,
John

The SP on the Pommel plate means the plate was manufactured by Standard Products.
BM CO scabbard was manufactured by Beckwith Mfg Co.
Here is some of the best info out there

Wayne, Thanks for the info and link. I thought the SP was something I had seen before related to Standard Products but wasn't aware that they provided bayo parts. Also noticed in the link that Hemphill (H in a shield) made the end plates for Imperial too. Literally learn something every day on here.
Thanks again for the help.

While we're at it, I have had a M4 bayonet for years before I ever had a carbine. On the guard it says: "U.S. M4 Bren-Dan" and the scabbard has: U.S.M8A1 PV/H. Is this a Korean war issue? It does not have the leather rings for the handle, but some sort of poly-carbonate with lots of diamonds for the grip surface.

Nice info, any info is more than I had. And they don't really mention dates or even the era. I wish they at least rated the quality of the ones talked about. Mine for sure has the very granular gray parker finish and that granularity has worn completely off on the back, just behind the false edge where it contacts the inside of the scabbard. And indeed the handle is slightly too short. At both ends it's not completely against the pommel or at the guard end. But there's not much of a gap so no big deal.

But the tang is peened on in the strange manner he mentioned for the Conetta! It has that weird rectangular marking and is more attracive than most that just have the tang peened on crudely with a ball peen hammer strike or two.

So maybe this is an early Bren-Dan when they were just past the Conetta phase? Like a hybrid or something?

It actually seems to be a nice bayo and I get it razor sharp easily. The point is so pointy a diabetic person could easily use it as a finger prick to get a blood sample!! When I touch the end with my finger it slightly wants to stick to my finger. That's a pretty pointy bayo. Seems to keep it's edge well. But for some reason I can't get the false edge as sharp as the true edge. Maybe due to the curvature.

I'm done here, I don't want to completely hijack the original poster's thread.

Plastic grips on M4 bayonets are typically shorter than the shank. I think that may have been done so that the handles could be used on bayonets that had already been rebuilt once before. When they were rebuilt, the pommel was removed and the seating notches for the pommel were ground down so that the pommel could be put back on and there would be enough tang sticking out to be peened to hold the pommel in place. That resulted in a slightly shorter shank for the handle to be put on. The shorter plastic handles would still fit but without any gaps.
