To my surprise, with an essentially never used stock, the type I barrel band was extremely tight.
I was able to slise the band down only with the screw removed, and going underneath the retention spring.
While its great there is no barrel movement, obviously I need to be able get the band on over the spring.  I do have a different retaining spring I can try, but maybe there are other things to look at first?

edit: I did find a similar issue discussed but with a type III and no applicable tips there.

Is your barrel band real or a repro? There are repros out there that are undersized. I’ve owned a couple and it took removing material from the nose of the stock to get them on.

I don't think so.

Maybe some grease on the spring tip will help.

The worked!    Was able to slip it on without resorting to impact tools or any other damaging methods. :)

Next:
With a little force on the barrel, it moves within the band.
That would explain the wear mark on the barrel (seen in the previous post).
Suggestions ?   (This is a midway return and nothing particularly special about it)

In WBIII it states the new design went to two pads from three (more on carbine in depth).   Is this an editing error?   The only good photo I've found so far showing the inner band doesn't appear to have any pads.   http://www.uscarbinecal30.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4547&PID=33878&title=type-1-band-id#33878
The drawings in Kuhnhausen really not helpful on this.
Could it be that Larry intended the sentance to read that the new  design went from 360 degree contact to 3 pads in contact with the barrel?

another photo showing the inside of thsa bands is here

I'm probably a little late here, but what I see is the spring is bottomed.  Use a punch on the opposite side of the stock to bring it out just shy of flush on the locking side.  This gives the spring more flex so the band will slide over easily....

Hey Matt been outta town, missed this. It was my thread where I had problems with a tight fit. It’s still very tight, but I have to back the screw out as far as possible. I’m glad you got it fixed. It will get easier the more you do it.
