This is my first M1941 and I know very little about them. Any thoughts are welcome.
Thanks

I had one. the bayonet is good for holding candles and that is about all I would do with it. It shot ok, but in my opinion, it couldn't hold a candle to the Grand. (sorry about the bad pun) The only real advantage that it had was the ability to be refilled without ejecting the clip. I really didn't care for it so it went away.

What a cool firearm. I know next to nothing about them, but always wanted to fire one. Thanks for the photos.

They saw some limited use early in WWII, by the Marines I think. I suppose they had enough disadvantages where the Garand had supposed advantages and won out. I don’t think is a very attractive rifle to be honest, but that’s only an opinion.

Ian McCullum of 'Forgotten Weapons' has an excellent YouTube video on it's history; I think he even shoots one. If you're interested.

Their major weak point was the magazine. While it was great for quick reloads from stripper clips the sheep metal was subject to easily being damaged by a drop or being slammed into the ground or rocks. With the Garand. you had to eject a partial clip scattering the rounds and put in a new full clip instead of just recharging with a couple of rounds. The johnson could be refilled with as few as a single round through the side loading port. But the potential for damage to the magazine outweighed the topping off advantage. The other shortcoming was the bayonet. It wasn't sturdy and a heavier bayonet caused the recoil action to malfunction. Those were the main reasons along with late delivery of the test rifle after the M1 had already been adopted, that the Johnson was never adopted even as a substitute standard.
