Remember a thing called a newspaper? There was always the comics section, but the Sunday paper always had a bigger section, and it was in color! Some of the musings offered a quick chuckle, others might have required some thought, some items would just go over your head as the target might have been something geared to the adults. As to last Sundays replies, Smoke pole said it best with it must be worth 4x more!  Wayne, Never seen the U.S. marked. Amusing I got about halfway through. His comment about making their way to the trenches reminded me of the story of a visitor to a battlefield. The visitor supposedly says something to the effect of "Isn't a good thing this park was here so they would have a place for the battle." I've heard some comments pretty close to that so I can beleive it happened.  |

A few months ago I ran across a needed round Winchester bolt on eBay for a very fair price. The seller stated that it was stamped with a "W". The pictures were crappy so I couldn't tell for sure, but I bought it. Turns out the stamped "W" was actually a paint stamped "M" and the bolt was a post-war replacement. I asked for a refund and it was granted. But the prique turned around a relisted it as a Winchester bolt and sold it to someone who didn't know better. Anyone can post a funny! Anyone? Here is a S-A marked in the slingwell! Look how crisp the this baby is with that CC, hardly any signs of sanding! It would seem Springfield was not getting enough credit for their stocks because collectors could not find the marking in the slingwell, so to boost their street credibility, for future collectors, then started marking the slinwell as well, just like a real WW2 stock should!  In fairness to the seller he states he "restores" stocks and that he added the Springfield stamps.

LOL, well you pulled your swing on this one. It is an Underwood bolt that someone attempted to weld up the marking and stamped the lug. The problem is when welding it messes with the hardening of the bolt, more specifically the lug may now be compromised. If the lug was annealed to stamp it may be too soft. The welding area heat creeped to the back of the lug where it locks up in the receiver. Think of what the damage to the receiver would be when the bolt breaks. Next we have what must be the Holy Grail submitted by a member. Diamond'd KR, I'm wondering where they came up with that idea? Wish I could measure the thickness, where it's marked. Think it was ground away to stamp this mark? See no signs of over stamping, though I suspect manipulating or the grinding thinner mentioned above. Also see NO hardness punch marks. Possible it's a Cast Hammer? Either way someone thinks it's worth over $40+.... With NO returns accepted. 3 bidders, all with many transactions. Current lead bidder with over 2105..... Yeah once in the 1940's by the Department of Sea Turtles and again in the 1960's or maybe 70's by the DOD as an acceptable Jeep part.

Sorry for the delayed response. I just saw this as I didn't get the notification of the post (and several others). If you still have the barrel, can we see a pic looking back at the front of the gas piston cylinder where it attaches to the barrel and about 3" in front of it? Also a pic of the breach showing the entrance to the chamber. This looks like it may be an insert, where a barrel is milled down and inserted into the rear of a demilled barrel. Need to see the above to determine if this is the case. Jim |

Unfortunately this sold BIN and could not get a better picture of the breech. I am thinking a SG made barrel that was ground and they added the PW. If the buyer reads this post maybe we can get some measurements. Winchester did not use a swagged cylinder. Companies that did was Inland BLC Saginaw Saginaw location Rockola Buffalo Arms

 The area that caught my eye is the barrel in front of the gas piston. Maybe not as what it appears to be which is why I'd like to see more pics. Obviously not available. This prompted me to add a post to the forum showing the various gas piston areas for the commercial manufacturers. Often this area is unique and can ID who made it or used it.
