I’m excited to finally add something legit M1A1 to my collection! Scored this from eBay over the weekend for just over $100. It was advertised as a crossbow stock! Oh how I love scores like these, haha.
Anyway, totally unissued stock and grip. The forearm appears to be birch and I’m guessing this came from the spares that ended up in the rebuild program. The recoil plate is still covered in cosmoline. And I can’t help but slap my forehead at the irony that last month I sold a gorgeous 5 mil Inland that would have been perfect for this dang thing…Ugh! I posted a WTB ad in a couple places for the missing stock section. Hopefully won’t take too long to find. Edited by New2brass - Nov 14 2022 at 7:20pm |

I have a similar forearm unit with All But the butt stock assembly. Some parts on the bay. Apex gun parts has top cover. Butt stock unit hard to find. Your forearm may be Walnut sapwood as is OI marked.

I’m in talks right now with someone that has the whole folding stock assembly that’s currently on a junk stock. Might turn this into one stop shopping. We will see if we can get together on a price.

I wonder if the recoil plate covers at Apex and Sarco are actually USGI or NOS? Both places say they have them and list as NOS, USGI. Both places show a cover with nice fresh parkerizing, but to my eye they also show marks from where the hinge screw had been installed. Thoughts?

Well I’ve pretty much got everything to complete the stock. I had fully expected this would take quite a while to complete. So, it was pretty good luck to find someone parting out a stock and that the available parts were in good enough condition to match the stock. I’m tickled to finally have a complete M1A1 stock. No assembled photos yet because I’m still oiling the wood.

I decided to go for one of the Apex recoil plate covers. It arrived today and I’m a bit disappointed. It is NOT unissued or new old stock. Instead it is a very good condition, used part that was repacked in 1963. The price is still the best around as far as I have found. FYI for anyone considering picking one of these up.

After cleaning with Hoppes. Complete with multiple dings and scratches through the finish.

Finally get to put the stock back together! The deal with Apex turned into a bit of a mess that’s now finally resolved. I ended up returning the top cover. Took a few days for them to concede that they have no NOS top covers. I agreed to have them send me an exchange for one in better condition. Someone grabbed the wrong piece though and I ended up with a recoil plate. Now today I have another cover in hand that is worthy of going on this stock.

It turns out that an M1A1 stock has pretty good balance as long as you have a spare M14 castle nut to stick under the grip. Pretty good way to display it!
