So I found this M1A1 carbine. Barrel date 08-1942, serial number 48404.  Stock and inland carbine are consitant with very early inland. My books indicate this serial number is to early. I have found posts indicating that production started at around 30,000. Nra says production at 42000. Another forum post indicates documented possible test rifles starting at 36000.

Question is this serial number possible. What is your thoughts.

M1A1
Numbers all over the place.
From RC Larson's book The M1 Carbine -
places the first M1A1 at about 65,000
(first serial # block 101-999,000) May 1942 - Dec 1943
Confusion?
Inland first shipped M1A1 stocks to the Army in late Oct. or early Nov. of 1942.
Comments??

 Larson?, check your premises.
The M1a1s, like the early M2s were not made in any order. they were pulled from the line to assemble as needed.

the early m1a1's had short grip screws-1/2 inch  or 1/4" shorter, forget which but are shorter.

-if short screw I would say you might have a home run

I believe this one to be a correct extremely early one. Going through books and parts list everything is correct for a really early inland down to serrated mag catch, springed pin, cross serrated push safety, single slide dismount cut on early receiver.  Only part I found replaced was the type 1 firing pin. It had a type 3 SG.

Matched to what looks to also be an extremely early folding stock with the thicker very early stock thickness of 1.135, early fatboy and correct small crossed cannons markings on the bottom, IO marked inside and Deep groove forstock.

I have been looking for 20 years for one of these and picked this one. I like it. Also thanks to Dave and others sent info, serial number ranges and info.

Thanks.

FWIW, my M1A1 serial #247094 had the short screw in it, unfortunately the wood inside the grip was stripped out where the short threads of that screw were, handgrip was very loose and would not tighten. Ended up replacing the short screw with the longer screw.
