I am curious to know when the front band and bayonet lug actually came into play for combat. Not production time, but battle field time? I have seen one photo with the lug showing during a landing on Iwo Jima but that seems early to me? I always watch WW2 footage and have yet to actually see one.
You see them in the movies all the time and expected, but I have yet to spot one in actual war footage. Europe theater as well? Post war yes, but not during. Just curious is all. They came a day late and a dollar short on that design even though I prefer using the earlier ones myself.

There is a film clip on Okinawa of two soldiers in a jeep being pushed out of the mud by some other vehicle ( a dozer if I recall correctly) and it appears that one of them has a carbine with a bayonet lug. That is the only other shot that I've seen that appears to show a wartime carbine with a bayonet lug.

Thanks for the replies and keep them coming. That fine line between combat and Occupation is hard to narrow down for sure. All came about pretty much at the same time. I'm sure some new recruits had them on Okinawa but once again, I have seen nothing that nails it. Type 3 was a huge improvement overall, but I still favor the earlier. As well as the flip or leaf sights. Just me being me is all when dealing with WWII stuff. Thanks again for the input and info. I know little, but always want to learn.
