Research Assistance

Saginaw Receivers
3,249,020 thru 3,651,519
5,834,619 thru 6,071,188

We are researching changes in receiver features in an attempt to identify when these changes took place. This also helps to reconstruct some of the shuffling around between the two factories. Much of this information has not been previously requested or reported due to the size limitations of a datasheet.

Your assistance with this research would be very much appreciated.

The answers to the questions that follow and/or pictures can be posted here. Alternatively, the information and pictures can be e-mailed to the following Club e-mail address.

You can also submit a full datasheet. A datasheet can be downloaded and printed  http://uscarbinecal30.com/forum/uploads/4/CC_-_DataSheet_rev4__1-1-11.pdf" rel="nofollow - HERE

Please note: if you have previously submitted a datasheet in these serial ranges, we ask that carefully review the information that we are looking for. We will then update the datasheet on file with any new or missing information.

For your convenience: at the bottom of this post is something to help you submit your answers. Simply copy and paste that information into your e-mail or forum post to respond and fill in the information as you read through the questions.

Question #1:

What is the full serial number?

(If you must provide a partial please use two lower case x's for the last two digits. Example: 3250020 would be 32500xx.)

Question #2:

Above the serial number are the letters S and G. What are the characters following each letter if any?

S.G.    S'G'    or simply SG

Question #3:

Which of the following markings are on the receiver ring?

CAL. .30 Ml
(period after CAL and another preceding 30, Ml font is Sans Serif)

CAL. 30 M1 (Sans Serif Ml)
(period after CAL, no period preceding 30, Ml font is Sans Serif, period following Ml)

CAL. 30 M1 (Serif M1)
(period after CAL, no period preceding 30, M1 font is Serif)

Other?
     (please send photo if other)

Question #3A:  Is the number 3 Flat or Rounded top?

Question #4:

Rear Tang: is it Wide (left) or Narrow (right)

 Question #5:

At the rear of the left side of the receiver there may be a feature unique to Saginaw we refer to as an "ear" (left & center below).

Does your receiver have a rounded ear (left), squared ear (center), or no ear (right)?

Question #6:

There may or may not be letters and/or numbers on the left side of the receiver. If present what are they and where?

Examples include SI or SG. The SG can be 3/16ths (larger) or 2/16ths (small). There may or may not be an additional letter and/or number near the middle of the left side. Please indicate all that are present

Question #7:

If there any markings on the front of the bottom of the receiver, what are they and where?

If present they are usually on or around the trigger housing lug. Examples below are T (left) and G (right)

Question #8:

What is the name of the barrel manufacturer and the date, if present?

Question #9:

Is the rear slide cut was machined in different ways. Is the end of the cut Round or Square?

I'm specifically interested to see reports of others in the 3.6 range (or nearby range) with rounded ear like the one I posted on Milsurps.

Wow, my favorite block!

SN 5834657

This came into my possession as one of the boltless carbines issued by the CMP. I'm afraid I'm not near enough to it at this point in my life to provide much detail right now (but I will return to this thread by July 4 to provide additional input. It's my M2 shooter and I can foresee a much needed break in routine about then).

It does have an undated Winchester barrel with associated Winchester proof (WP) in addition to what I believe is Saginaw's own proof P based upon both appearance and measurement. When I first got it, I thought replacement, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Only other detail immediately available from my notes on this purchase and relevent to this query right now is that the receiver is "wide tang"

Check back in a month!

Can I share this request for help to those who may not be members here.....
Over on Milsurps ?
Assuming we could just post the info there? and transfer it here for members there that don't frequent here.
(that make any sense?)

And are we to stay between the posted serial ranges...

@TenOCEE the findings will be shared
I found your post on Milsurps. If you could fill in the missing information of front ring markings, bottom markings and narrow down the serial numbers it would be appreciated.

@ Painter, We are trying to stay in the specified range as we know the numbers have the mixed markings. If you feel this same will assist in the lower ranges that can also be submitted. Better to look at info then look for it!
So please do share with everyone and anyone.

Hopefully this will also roll into a good reporting for a manufactures update as it has been too long!
Rather than reposting you can send to the email address in the bottom of this post. This way you can ease concerns of those not whishing to have the complete serial number publicly posted. Only Sleepless and myself will have the access for this project. Full data sheets will go to Bob.

Thank you to everyone that has submitted info Thumbs Up

I'll start a new topic on Milsurps Monday.
Will pretty much copy and paste the information from this opening topic.
The pictures will help show everyone what we're trying to compare.

1) You'll want to ask if it's a large SG or small SG on side of the receiver.
2) Also, SG receivers seem to read MI. with a dot after the I
3) Some SAG barrels are SAGINAW S G and some are SAGINAW S . G .

Dan,
My data sheet, prepared  by Dave Tenant is available for your project, you have only to look up my post ( The Gift). Serial # 3549164. It falls somewhere in the middle of that first block. I thought it had been submitter but apparently not.
I hope it is helpful to your project.
Best regards,
Charlie

@ Charles, Yes we got your data sheet. What is not clear is if there are any side or bottom markings
Questions 6 and 7.
This is one of those things missing on many data sheets and we are unsure how many are void of markings which is easy to miss when not specifically looking for them.

We are getting off to a good start.
For anyone looking for a project we could use a few people data mining Gun Broker for what information there is.

If interested let me know or post here so there is not a duplication of efforts.

Hello- Question- If my S’G’ falls between these serial ranges- is it assumed that these features are potentially present, but don’t indicate sharing of receivers between the Grand Rapids and Saginaw Plants? My rifle has several of the inconsistencies listed, but I was wondering if / where it fits in. Apologies if this info isn’t known yet/ or if at all.

Forgot to ask about the receiver cut on the right side, semi-circle or square cut.

I have been in and out of M1 carbines since the late 70s and I don't remember ever seeing a 58 or 6 mil Saginaw M1 Carbine. What is the highest serial number reported in that block? I am sure it is posted in the Carbine Club Newsletters but I don't have them handy anymore. There must not have been a lot of them manufactured.

@ bigheavy, as far as ordnance was concerned Saginaw was one entity with two factories.
It is theorized the first delivery of SG marked receiver were delivered out the the GR plant.
Later there were receivers sent to GR to have the serial numbers applied.
There is much more to the full story and why we are looking closer at the certain serial number ranges to establish what may have actually taken place.

@ kar, the highest serial was reported as 5,87x,xxx
that information as well as information of some of the SG factory receiver questions stems mostly from CCNL 357 which 19 pages were devoted to serial numbers and anomalies.

Everyone, If you see a Saginaw anywhere you can report this information.
If you see it at an auction site and do not want to transpose the information please post or drop me an email or PM with a link and I will take care of the rest.

on the note of serial numbers, do not forget the "Serial numbers to look for and report"

@ Smokepole, I missed you post. We are only looking for receivers used at the Saginaw plants at this time, but thank you for asking.

@ Johnny, Are you sure your left rear receiver detail is a rounded ear?

Square corner to the ear is the meaning there. Thank you. Under IP they ground the corner rounded to follow the circular tooling hole.

I bought this carbine recently from Gunbroker. Here is the info you want:

Question 1: Serial number - 34719xx

Question 2: Initials above serial number - SG

Question 3: Front ring details (use a capitol i for sanserif one) -
                      U.S.CARBINE
CAL.30MI.          (appears as shown, no spaces)

Question 4: Rear tang - wide

Question 5: Rear left receiver detail - no ear

Question 6: Front and middle left detail - front left: SG  (2/16ths), no other marks on left side

Question 7: Receiver bottom detail - serif A stamped on trigger housing lug

Question 8: Barrel manufacturer and date - UNDERWOOD 7-43 with badly stamped flaming bomb below and
5/32 P below that but visible with type III barrel band, short skirt. The middle of the word UNDERWOOD is barely visible but the date stamp is sharp. The turning marks on the barrel are still visible.

Question 9: Rear slide cut detail - round

Not much finish left on this old soldier. It has a Winchester stock with an RA rebuild mark that probably predates the .U. rebuild mark on the left side. Has a san serif P (3/8in) on the front of the grip, and a very small 1 stamped on the bottom of the grip.
It also probably got the pits in its barrel from storage with the Israeli military as it has the serial number stamped into the left side of the stock under the comb. Also courtesy of one of the rebuilds, has an Inland trigger housing with mixed parts.
Hope this helps.

Question 1: Serial number - 32954xx

Question 2: Initials above serial number - SG

Question 3: Front ring details (use a capitol i for sanserif one) - U.S.CARBINE  (there is a space after CAL.)
                                                                                                       CAL. 30M1

Question 4: Rear tang - wide

Question 5: Rear left receiver detail - no ear

Question 6: Front and middle left detail - nothing on left side of rcvr.

Question 7: Receiver bottom detail - nothing on bottom

Question 8: Barrel manufacturer and date -       SAGINAW S.G. DIV           1/8in P - 6 inches from muzzle
                                                                           GENERAL MOTORS           no date
Question 9: Rear slide cut detail - round

This one has Arlington Ordnance import mark under barrel.
It is in an m2 stock with no markings and white paint pen numbers on both sides of the stock. Don't know where it came from.
It does still retain a SG trigger housing.
I hope this furthers your research efforts.

Here's the requested data from my S.G., the first original carbine I owned. It was in the same family for 70 years, brought back from WWII by the seller's late father-in-law & used for hunting by the late mother-in-law, then his late wife. I believe it to be 100% original, and it has a highwood, oval cut Trimble to S.G. subcontract stock.

Your 1.82 is a grand Rapids made receiver.  <aybe take a better look from the side to see if the primes are present

Saginaw facility sent receivers to the Grand Rapids facility in late 43
Yours is one of those Saginaw facility made receivers.
The front ring when reported was with a serif 1.
Can you check and also is the 3 in 30 rounded or flat top. Post a pic if possible.

Yeah, I saw the serial number range you were looking for, after the fact. My apologies, feel free to delete the post with the 1.82 example, or make it so I can delete it and keep your thread as clean as possible.

I assume you're wanting more info from the 3.63 Saginaw. Here are a couple of photos. If you can make my original post editable, I can move these photos there so as not to clutter your thread.

Please let me know if you need more specific info. As to "primes", I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but there are no more marks on the receiver other than what I've posted.

Prime more correctly should be an apostrophe S'G'.
If there are none then this is of interest as a possible roll die error.

will condense post when I can and followup if any other info is needed.

I just looked at the data sheet and am amazed at the details that are listed.
I had NO idea what amount od work and research has been done on the Carbines.
Now I’m sorry I didn’t buy one years ago so I could have participated in all that has been done
Now I can’t wait to get my  arbine from my FFL as soon as it arrives so I can start filling out a data sheet on my Carbine.

How can I determine if a data sheet may already exist for my serial number?

3A- I can’t make that part of the 3 out

6- Y very well struck lower middle of the receiver
7- no markings I can see
8- INLAND MFG DIV
    GENERAL MOTORS
       10/43
