I recently purchased this ‘T’ marked Underwood via Guns International for just over a grand. Seemed like a relatively decent price considering Midway USA was charging almost $1,900 for ‘em a couple years ago.
I don’t know much about it at this point, as the description left a lot to be desired. I’m not even sure whether the thing bears an import mark. I’m pretty excited about the prospect of having my first type one stock, although I’ll maintain a healthy skepticism until I can determine whether it’s the real deal or not. I’ll provide more pictures and information when I have the carbine in my hot little hands— hopefully sometime next week. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Nice! Glad I haven't been looking because that would have been too tempting!

I know the pictures leave a lot to be desired. I was directed to Guns.com (whom I have never done business with before) from the Guns International webpage while doing some browsing Sunday afternoon. I would have liked to have spoke with someone in regards to whether there was an import stamp and inquired about the barrel manufacturer/date, but they’re closed on Sundays. What’s more, supposedly there were some pending offers on the carbine that necessitated me using the “buy it now” feature to avoid missing out. I don’t do casinos, so this is the extent of my gambling habit…
The firearm shipped this morning and should be here either late this week or early next. I’ll provide updates soon.

I picked up the carbine this afternoon. There appears to be a partial “W” stamp along with a “PW” proof, which would indicate the barrel is made by Winchester. I’m no expert on the stock cartouches but it does have an Overton/ordnance bomb in the sling well. There appears to be what I believe is a service number etched on the top of the bolt, rear left receiver, and also on the slide itself. The barrel is not import marked. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Here you are, Dan! Entering my serial in the “uscarbinecal30m1.com” components list under “Underwood Elliot-Fisher” did show results. Though hard to see the manufacturer name under the rear sight, I can clearly make out a “wood” beneath. ![]() |

the top of the ord bomb was looking like a W.
But it is not. Winchester bought leftover receivers and used them in thier production. But this is not one of them. A bit of coincidence that it has a Win Barrel

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Dan. So I’m assuming you’ve got information regarding which serial number range these Winchester-acquired receivers are, and mine doesn’t fall into that category?

Here’s one of the three series of numbers. Looks like possibly a Korean War service number? If so, I’d love to track the individual down, but I’ve never had much luck utilizing Ancestry or Fold3. ![]() |

I got a chance to take the Underwood apart and give it a thorough cleaning last night. This thing was so filthy, I don’t think it’s been cleaned since the Korean War! In doing a thorough assessment of the carbine, I’m exceedingly pleased with what I got for $1,100. All parts appear to be USGI and retain their original finish.

Which type of magazine catch? Honestly, if you were buying it for a nice shooter, I think you did great. Came with two mags, the sling and oiler, has the type 2 front band, and a highwood stock. Assuming the MW is decent, etc. I'd be tickled pink.

Thanks, Matt. I don’t know what type 1 stocks are going for these days, but I’d imagine the stock alone is worth nearly half what I paid for the whole kit and caboodle. I’m torn as to whether I should use this guy as a shooter or the CAI-marked and arsenal-refinished Inland that I got from Cabela’s. I would imagine that this Underwood has more collector’s appeal from the standpoint that it retains its original finish, has a Korean War-era service number etched into several components, and is not import marked. Then again, perhaps my reasoning is flawed here.
I absolutely love the M1 carbine platform, but I also have love affairs with a wide array of WW2 firearms and militaria in general… I’m just not sure I can justify having three of these carbines. Right now I’ve got an arsenal-refinished but non-import-marked Inland (serial #310000, which I’m not too keen on getting rid of, due to its unusual serial number), the aforementioned Inland that I purchased from Cabela’s, and this Underwood here. I’d really like a shooter; I plan on running the absolute snot out it, though I’ll likely be shooting a lot of light/mild reloads. I have yet to experience catastrophic failure of any of my firearms, but the thought is always at the forefront of my mind when it comes to shooting curios and relics, you know? I don’t want to risk doing irreparable damage to a firearm that has even a modicum of value to collectors and history buffs alike. On the same token, I’m a shooter— I hate having “safe queens” that sit around and collect dust, even though I do get a certain amount of satisfaction just from fondling them and turning them over in my hands. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too, can you?
