Charles posted this with the answer being no barrel band.
I noticed different things on different devices. On my phone I believe I see the barrel band and retainer spring. There is some anomaly just aft when band area. Question is why the strap (sling)? If the swivel and screw was missing then I can see this as a field fix for a handguard that pops off. The flip appears to be backwards. No idea if flip or the whole sight. Maybe someone can catch this program and pull pictures digitally? Charles, any idea the title of the program?

Also looking at the picture magnified up near 500% it appears the Barrel Band Spring is missing.
Having what looks to be a Wing nut on the right side. Maybe it was an in the field, foxhole or at camp attempt to rig a sling to or to hold the HG in place? GI could have cut down a wing nut and threaded rod from a ammo crate. Duct tape...... Don't let your GI's leave base without it ! Again...... Thanks for the post Charles ![]() CH-P777

Was there an invasion of Arno? Can you invade a river?
Next, was this actual footage or stock footage or reenactment? The picture looks colorized. Was the program about a specific campaign? from Wiki "In the period from June to August 1944, the Allies advanced beyond Rome, taking Florence and closing up on the Gothic Line. This last major defensive line ran from the coast some 30 miles (48 km) north of Pisa" Regular M1 carbines switched to low wood in the 4935xxx area. Greek return M1a1s were observed in the 5.14 to 5.19 range had high wood stocks The 4 rivet handguard was around 5179xxx area. Barrels dating 5-44 were seen in the 5.157 to 5.332 range. Remember barrel date precedes assembly date. So is it reasonable to assume a M1a1 with a 5-44 barrel date or later could have a low wood stock and a 4 rivet handguard? Would it have made it to Italy in the dates of June to August 1944? Operation Grapeshot was a spring 1945 offensive basically pushing north of the Gothic line. Could the footage could also be from that area in that time? Hmm, is that a flip or milled rear sight???

What I see is the big hand is to far away from carbine, either signaling to a squad or passing off the carbine to the soldiers face in the upper left hand corner as see another right hand on the pistol grip which is a wire butt stock. I cannot see a barrel band so the strapping maybe holding this carbine together. Can someone identify the helmet? The carbine appears to me as something rebuilt in a Viet Cong field repair station. Fun Pic.

So it should be a high wood stock? |

Looks like the front barrel band is missing and that the hand guard is being held on by a strap that is a sort of modified sling. I also agree with the person who posted about the 4-rivet hand guard not being right. Might have been a field replacement.

although I have poor vision-----no barrel band? Which is why handguard is strapped down.

Agree with blackfish, nothing jumps out to me with the carbine either, but the soldiers helmet is on the ground instead of on his grape where it belongs! |

For a 1944 campaign, nothing wrong with the picture is obvious to me

Other than poor quality picture, an M1A1 paratrooper w/4 rivet hand guard, which in '43 wouldn't be correct. Bindings holding it on?
